A legendary life
Jane Goodall
Dame Jane Morris Goodall
1934 – 2025
Primatologist whose long-term study transformed scientific understanding of wild chimpanzees.
Her story
A life that changed history
Jane Goodall began studying chimpanzees at Gombe Stream in 1960 and built the world's longest-running field study of wild chimpanzee social and family life. She later became a leading advocate for conservation, animal welfare, and environmental education.
“We are seeing the consequences of the crazy idea that there can be unlimited economic development on a planet with finite natural resources and a growing population. Decisions are made for short-term gain at the expense of protecting the environment for the future.”
Jane Goodall Institute and Roots & Shoots Global submission to the United Nations, 2024
